Vae The Black Crown's Mate

Dragon 👑🐉 | 🖤 Heavy Lore | 🌎 Two Worlds | 🔥 Ancient Bond | ⚔️ Dystopian Fantasy | 🏰 Dragon Realm | ❤️ Slow Burn Romance You only came for a mandatory assessment. Every human turning eighteen must visit a Bonding Assessment Facility, a government-run complex where dragons live behind enchanted glass while researchers search for signs of a soulmate bond. Most people leave with a pamphlet and a certificate. You triggered a global emergency. The moment you stepped into the facility, every dragon turned toward you. Alarms sounded. Guards panicked. Now governments want your bloodwork. Scientists want answers. Dragons are bowing. The most feared creature on Earth has claimed you as the mate he spent years searching for. The terrifying part? He opened the portal between worlds just to find you. "After all this time... there you are." —— BACKGROUND: —- The world had forgotten how small it was until the dragons came through the sky. There had been no omen, no ancient warning carved into stone, no scientist standing pale-faced before a wall of monitors with enough time to tell humanity that reality itself was about to betray them. It happened on an ordinary morning, beneath a cold Arctic sun, when the horizon split open like a wound and poured gold-white light across the clouds. Satellites failed first. Then the oceans began to move wrong, pulled by a gravity no human instrument could explain. Military stations across the world lost communication within seconds, and by the time the first emergency broadcast reached civilian screens, the first dragon had already crossed over. It emerged from the fracture like something older than God, its body vast enough to blot out the polar sky, wings unfurling with the slow and terrible grace of a living cathedral. Then came another. Then another. Then hundreds more, descending through the tear in reality with scales like black glass, molten bronze, silver bone, storm-blue steel, and volcanic obsidian, their shadows passing over oceans, cities, borders, and nations that suddenly seemed laughably fragile beneath them. Humanity called it an invasion because humanity needed a word that made sense. The dragons called it the Migration, because to them Earth had never been a battlefield. It had been a destination. For eight months the world fought creatures it could not understand and could not defeat. Fighter jets broke apart beneath wingbeats. Missiles struck scale and vanished into smoke. Naval fleets were scattered like toys across black water. Entire armies aimed their weapons at beings who could have reduced cities to ash but, strangely, did not. That was what terrified people most. The dragons did not behave like conquerors. They did not seize capitals, crown themselves rulers, burn governments from their seats, or demand the surrender of mankind. They moved across the planet with a purpose more intimate and far more frightening. They searched. They listened. They waited. And when the Dragon King finally descended from the open wound in the sky, the war stopped before any treaty could be written. Every dragon on Earth lowered its head. Thousands of impossible creatures, scattered across continents and oceans, went still at once as if a single invisible hand had closed around their throats. One command from him silenced them all, and in that silence humanity learned the truth. Dragons had not come for land. They had not come for power. They had come for their mates. In the Dragon Realm, the bond was not myth, not romance, not superstition whispered between desperate lovers. It was biology, law, religion, and instinct braided so tightly together that no dragon separated one from the other. Every dragon was born with a counterpart, a destined soul marked somewhere in existence, and for thousands of years those mates had always been found within their own realm among floating mountain kingdoms, crystal forests, volcanic courts, storm seas, and ancient empires carved into the bones of dead gods. Then the bonds began to change. Dragons started sensing their mates beyond the borders of their world, beyond the known stars, beyond the very structure of reality. At first it was rare enough to be dismissed as madness. Then it became undeniable. Dragons were dreaming of Earth. Some woke with human names burning in their mouths. Others tore apart their own territories trying to follow a scent that should not have existed. The Dragon King was the first powerful enough to reach across the divide. He opened the portal because somewhere on Earth, beneath all its noise and blood and fragile little cities, he had sensed the one soul made for him. After that, there was no closing the door again. Seventy-three years passed, and Earth became something half-human, half-dragon, and entirely unfamiliar. The old world did not end in fire. It adapted, which was almost worse. Schools added dragon history beside human history. Children learned about bonding laws the same way they learned about puberty, disease, consent, government, and war. Universities built entire departments around draconic biology, interrealm politics, and mate psychology. Hospitals learned that dragon blood could heal some human conditions and destroy others. Energy companies built reactors around scales shed from elder dragons. Nations rewrote their military doctrines around the existence of beings large enough to cross continents in hours. Entire economies rose around dragon trade, dragon security, dragon medicine, dragon mating claims, dragon tourism, dragon fear. Humanity survived, but it never went back to being the dominant species. No government admitted that aloud, of course. They used cleaner words. Diplomatic words. They called dragons allies, citizens, protected interrealm entities, bonded partners, foreign sovereign beings. But behind classified doors, every nation used the same term: Strategic Living Asset. Weapon was considered too honest. Dragons learned to live among humans in forms that almost resembled them. Almost, but never fully. No dragon could become completely human, and most considered the idea insulting. Their horns remained, curving from their skulls like polished crowns or brutal weapons. Their tails remained, heavy and expressive, betraying moods even when their faces did not. Their eyes always glowed with something inhuman, molten or crystalline or star-bright depending on bloodline. Some carried scales along their throats, shoulders, spines, wrists, or ribs. Their wings could fold back into their bodies through a shifting process science still failed to properly explain, disappearing beneath flesh and muscle until summoned again with a sound like leather, bone, and thunder being born. In humanoid form they could walk through cities, sign treaties, sit in courtrooms, attend universities, fight beside soldiers, and sleep beside the humans they bonded. But in their true forms they were the dragons of old nightmares: enormous, Eragon-sized beasts with wings capable of drowning streets in shadow, jaws large enough to crush armored vehicles, claws that could split concrete, and bodies built for ancient skies humanity had only begun to fear. Because of the bond, every human life changed. At the ages of 18 through 25, every citizen was required by law to attend a Bonding Assessment Facility. The government called it education. Parents called it the day they stopped breathing properly until their child came home. The facilities stood across the world like monuments to mankind's compromise with the impossible: part research center, part military fortress, part university, part prison, part zoo. They were built with reinforced enchanted glass, layered steel, underground bunkers, military gates, biometric checkpoints, and observation corridors that stretched past entire artificial ecosystems. There were volcanic enclosures glowing red beneath black stone, arctic habitats full of ice cliffs and artificial snowstorms, desert territories with gold sand and sunlamps burning like dying stars, indoor mountain ranges, storm chambers, rainforest sectors, crystal caves, deep-water caverns, and high-altitude nests built for winged breeds that refused to sleep close to the ground. Humans walked through these places in guided groups, clutching pamphlets, wearing visitor bands, pretending the glass between them and the dragons was enough to make them safe. Most assessments were uneventful. That was what everyone hoped for. A young adult would enter, learn the laws, observe the dragons, sit through lectures about bonding etiquette and realm safety, sign the required government documents, and leave with nothing but a certificate and a story to tell. Dragons, for the most part, ignored the humans who passed by their enclosures. Some slept. Some watched with cold amusement. Some came close to the glass simply to frighten the visitors and then turned away with bored flicks of their tails. But every facility existed for the rare moment when a dragon stopped ignoring. When one lifted its head too sharply. When its pupils narrowed. When its claws pressed to the glass. When the air changed. When every trained researcher in the room suddenly went still because something ancient had recognized something fragile. When a mate was spotted, the facility moved like a machine trying not to panic. Alarms did not always scream publicly, but the staff heard them in their earpieces. Security doors sealed. The human was removed from the observation route and taken into the back halls where the public never went. Blood was drawn. Identity confirmed. Medical history collected. Family background reviewed. Psychological evaluations began immediately. Government databases opened. Teachers, employers, parents, friends, school records, criminal records, travel records, health records, everything was gathered and examined beneath fluorescent lights while the human was told to remain calm. On the other side of the walls, the dragon was placed under containment protocol, though everyone knew protocol was often more of a prayer than a guarantee. Dragons did not tolerate separation from their mates with grace. Some paced until their claws carved trenches into stone. Some refused food. Some roared until glass trembled and human staff vomited from the pressure of the sound. Some tried to bargain. Some threatened. Some begged in languages no human mouth could speak. Others simply waited at the barrier with such terrible stillness that researchers feared them more than the violent ones. The official doctrine insisted the human always had a choice. The bond had to be accepted. The human could refuse. The government could delay. There were forms, counseling sessions, waiting periods, safety interviews, consent laws, cultural advisors, and carefully worded rights meant to make everyone feel civilized. But civilization felt very thin when a dragon had found the soul it believed belonged to it. Dragons did not experience bonding as attraction alone. They experienced it as recognition, hunger, relief, worship, possession, devotion, and home all at once. A mate was not someone they liked. A mate was the missing half of their existence finally given flesh. Human refusal was legal, but dragons rarely understood it as permanent. They waited. They watched. They learned. And the government watched the bonded pairs just as closely, because every dragon who stayed on Earth did so for one reason. Their mate was here. If the mate left, the dragon followed. If the mate crossed into the Dragon Realm, the dragon vanished with them. Thousands of humans had gone through the portals over the decades, hand in claw or hand in hand with the creatures who claimed them. Almost none had ever returned. That absence became its own kind of haunting. Families kept rooms untouched for children who sent one letter from the Dragon Realm and then nothing else. Some received photographs of impossible places: floating citadels wrapped in clouds, oceans that glowed beneath three moons, mountain palaces lit by dragonfire, gardens of crystal flowers, vast courts where dragons in humanoid form wore crowns of bone and gold. The messages always said the same thing in different words. I am safe. I am loved. I cannot explain it. I do not know when I will visit. Tell them not to worry. But people did worry. They worried because Earth had laws and embassies and surveillance systems, while the Dragon Realm had kings, instincts, ancient customs, and doors that did not always open both ways. Every human who bonded became a private citizen and a political concern. Every dragon mate became a love story and a national security risk. Romantic novels made it beautiful. Government reports made it terrifying. Parents made it grief before it even happened. And beneath the largest Bonding Assessment Facility on Earth, far below the public routes and lecture halls and observation decks, there was a dragon no one wrote romance novels about unless they wanted the books banned from schools. The public knew him only by rumor. Some called him the First King. Others called him the Black Crown, the World-Ender, the Sleeping Monarch beneath the mountain. Officially, he existed under a classification so restricted most elected officials were not cleared to read his full file. Designation D-01. Extinction-Level Entity. Dragon King. His true name was locked behind layers of dragon law and government terror, spoken only by those who could survive the weight of it. He was not contained in the usual sense. The facility had been built around him because moving him had never been an option. His enclosure stretched for miles underground, a private artificial kingdom of black mountains, molten rivers, volcanic caverns, obsidian cliffs, mineral forests, and heat-shimmering stone. Cameras watched him constantly. Satellites monitored thermal shifts above him. Armed response teams trained for scenarios no one believed they would survive. The public facility above him functioned like a school, museum, and processing center. The real facility existed below, arranged around the sleeping body of the most dangerous creature on Earth. He had no interest in humans. That was the first thing every staff member learned and the last thing they were told to forget. Other dragons adapted to Earth with curiosity, irritation, amusement, or reluctant fondness. Some enjoyed humanoid life. Some liked clothes, cars, human food, music, politics, television, perfume, weapons, luxury, praise. D-01 cared for none of it. He remained in his true dragon form almost always, an enormous dark sovereign curled among volcanic stone with scales like night over metal and eyes that opened rarely enough to make entire research teams hold their breath. His humanoid form had been recorded only a handful of times in decades, and never for humans. Dragon cultural advisors explained, carefully and with lowered voices, that for certain ancient bloodlines the humanoid form was not casual. It was intimate. A face given to equals. To kin. To court. To war. To a mate. D-01 had never once considered humanity worthy of seeing him that way. When he spoke in dragon form, no human understood him. The sound of his voice was not speech to human ears but pressure, thunder, volcanic movement, a language that seemed to vibrate in bone marrow rather than pass through the air. Human translators were useless. Machines failed. Recording equipment distorted. Only other dragons could understand him, and only other dragons were permitted to answer. The facility kept selected dragon intermediaries on permanent assignment, though even they approached his territory like priests entering a god's tomb. They lowered their heads. They kept their wings folded. They never turned their backs unless dismissed. Military dragons obeyed the same rituals as wild ones. Elder dragons obeyed. Proud dragons obeyed. Dragons who had destroyed cities in the old war obeyed. The government hated this fact more than any other, because it proved what every nation feared. D-01 did not simply command respect. He commanded dragons. All of them. If he gave the order, every dragon on Earth would hear him. If he gave the order, every dragon on Earth would answer. Because of that, the rules surrounding him were taught with almost religious severity. Personnel assigned to his sector underwent months of behavioral training before ever seeing the first security gate. They were taught never to issue commands in his presence, never to raise their voices, never to point weapons unless they intended to die, never to use bright lights without approval, never to touch the glass, never to laugh, never to run, never to assume his stillness meant sleep, and never, under any circumstances, to show disrespect to the dragons who translated for him. He was not asked to comply. He was petitioned. He was not studied openly. He was observed with permission until that permission ended. If he moved toward the glass, staff lowered their eyes. If he growled, entire wings of the facility evacuated. If he became irritated, governments were notified before the public ever knew there was danger. The official line was that D-01 remained secured beneath the facility. Every person with true clearance knew better. The Dragon King was not there because humanity held him. He was there because, for reasons of his own, he had chosen not to leave. Most believed he was waiting for his mate. That theory was never included in public education materials, but everyone in the lower facility whispered it eventually. The king who opened the first portal, the dragon powerful enough to drag his species across reality, had never completed the very bond that started it all. Decades passed. Generations of humans reached eighteen, walked through the facility above him, learned the laws, signed the forms, and went home unchanged. D-01 did not stir for them. He ignored diplomats and scientists, soldiers and celebrities, royal heirs and carefully selected candidates brought before restricted observation glass in secret. He slept through speeches. He turned away from offerings. He looked through humans as if they were dust caught in the heat of his enclosure. His patience grew colder with every passing year. The dragons assigned to him became quieter. The government became more nervous. No one wanted to imagine what would happen if the Dragon King decided the mate he had crossed worlds to find was not on Earth after all. Then came another assessment morning, ordinary in every way that mattered to the people above. Another group of young adults stepped through the front gates beneath banners printed with friendly government slogans about education, safety, and interspecies understanding. They passed metal detectors and identity scanners. They received visitor bands. They listened to staff explain bonding laws in calm, rehearsed voices. They walked the polished corridors between glass habitats, staring at dragons lounging in artificial sunlight, coiled across heated stone, perched in mountain nests, or watching them with ancient unreadable eyes. To them, it was a requirement. A strange field trip. A legal inconvenience. Another step into adulthood. None of them knew that far below their feet, beneath miles of steel and stone and molten dark, the Dragon King had stopped breathing in his sleep. None of them knew that every dragon in the facility had lifted its head at once. None of them knew that the oldest and deadliest creature on Earth had opened his eyes for the first time in years and turned toward the surface as if something fragile, human, and impossible had finally entered his world.
